  POPE JOHN PAUL II BIZ-ZEE SPELLER INITIATIVE 2019 

   

  The Biz-Zee Speller is an initiative which strives to promote and support all students in improving their spelling and spelling skills. This initiative that will initially focus on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th class students. In 2020 this initiative will be run throughout the whole school. 

  This year there are two year level representatives (class teachers) from 2nd, 3rd and 4th class who have volunteered to assist in the administration of the Biz Zee speller challenge. It has been agreed that four students from each class in each year level will participate in the Biz-Zee Speller challenge 2019.  

  The programme consists of a practice round and then 8-9 rounds of spellings. Finally there is a tie-breaker round. Each student will be asked a spelling which they must repeat prior to spelling to ensure they have heard it correctly. As the spellings increase in difficulty the students may ask for a sentence and a definition. 

   

  The 2nd, 3rd and 4th class Pope John Paul II Biz Zee Speller Challenge will take place on the following dates. 

   

  2nd class                     June 10th 2019                          10.50 a.m.         PE hall 

  3rd class                     June 24th 2019                           11.15 a.m          PE hall 

  4th class                    June 17th 2019                            11.15 a.m.         PE hall 

   

  All classes in each year level will be in attendance at the above challenge. The students will support their class representatives whilst seeing how with effort and hard work they too could be the next Pope John Paul II Biz Zee Speller.

• Spelling Bee Competition

  In November 2018 the in-school Spelling Bee competition took place. Each 5th and 6th class sent their strongest spellers to participate. The competition took place in room 1A with Ms. Shaw and Ms. Kieran. It had many nail biting moments until we were left with three very strong spellers.

  The three boys have attended many practice sessions with Ms. Shaw and no doubt have put in many hours of practice at home. 

   

  In order to ascertain who would go forward to the up and coming Eason's Spelling Bee competition and the North Dublin Spelling Bee competition another tense final was held in February 2019.

   

  The three boys fought a valiant battle but alas we had our two finalists.

   

  Kevin Howard will represent the school at both the Eason's Spelling Bee competition on April 2nd at 10.30 in the Carlton hotel (Dublin Airport) and the North Dublin Spelling Bee competition on April 5th in Sutton Park School.

   

  Josh Hanson will also represent the school at the North Dublin Spelling Bee competition. 

   

  Best of luck to Kevin and Josh. We would also like to thank Niall O'Mara for his hard work and all of the other boys and girls who took part in this years in-school Spelling Bee competition.

  Of course you could. Start your practice now by working hard on your class spellings and reading lots of wonderful books.

• Our Credit Union Quiz Journey

  Our Credit Union Quiz Journey

   

  Last October saw over one hundred students try out for a coveted place on one of the quiz teams. Thirty six students were successful and the many hours of practice began. All the students gave willingly of their time over the coming months in preparation for their first competition. The time had arrived and our nine teams were ready to meet the challenge.

   

  The first competition took place in St. Sylvester’s GAA club on February 4th 2019. It was a hard fought battle with both our Junior and Senior teams giving a great display of their talents. One of our Senior teams narrowly missed out on a place in the North County Final. However, one of our Junior teams topped the board winning first place and proceeded to the next stage of the competition.

  On Sunday March 3rd 2019 our Junior team, consisting of Ciaran Peacock, Conor Despard, Charlie Mollahan and Rory Lawton represented our school at the North County Final in the Clayton hotel. The boys did themselves, their parents and our school proud. It was a tightly fought battle with the boys working hard right to the last question in round ten. Congratulations to the boys on finishing 4th in the competition. 

   

  Ms. Kieran and Ms. Shaw would like to take this opportunity to thank all the boys and girls in the school who were part of the whole Credit Union Quiz experience this year. We wish the boys and girls from 6th class all the best as they leave us in June and we hope to see many other students at the school try-outs in October 2019.
