Water Action Day

Some of our 4th & 5th class pupils

As part of Pope John Paul School’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and make changes on all environmental matters, the pupils of the school held a Water Action Day last Friday 5th March.

All pupils participated in activities and experiments relating to water conservation while wearing something blue to mark the occasion. The school is in the final stages of their effort s to achieve their third An Taisce Green Flag Award.

‘Play Your Part, Be Water Smart’ was the well chosen theme for the day. Pupils demonstrated to their school friends, teachers and parents how water filtration systems work, how the water in the world is scarce, how dirty water must be cleaned before re-use and more. Junior pupils investigated floating and sinking, buoyancy and the properties of water as it changes from steam to liquid to solid. More complex scientific concepts about densities of different liquids were well explained and understood by the pupils.

The school also demonstrated their commitment to environmental care in the use of their rainwater storage tank to water their prize winning vegetable garden. While all this was taking place other pupils were making good use of the school’s interactive whiteboards to play relevant water conservation and awareness games.

A great day was had by all involved!
